The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Saturday, August 16, launched raids at multiple properties linked to Tamil Nadu Rural Development Minister I Periyasamy and his son, DMK MLA and Dindigul East district secretary I P Senthil Kumar.

The searches, carried out under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), covered locations in Chennai, Madurai, and Dindigul. According to officials, the raids are part of an ongoing investigation into alleged money laundering and financial irregularities connected to the DMK leader’s family.

Key Locations Covered in Dindigul

  • The minister’s residence at Durairaj Nagar, Govindapuram

  • His daughter Indirani’s home at Ashok Nagar, Vallalar Nagar, Govindapuram

  • The residence of his son, MLA Senthil Kumar, at Seelapadi

Tight security was maintained during the searches, with Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel deployed around the sites.

Part of a Wider Probe

ED officials also searched companies and properties linked to Periyasamy in Chennai and Madurai. Sources said investigators were looking for documents and evidence of financial irregularities.

The raids are seen as part of a broader pattern of central agency action in Tamil Nadu. Earlier this year, the ED probed alleged irregularities worth over ₹1,000 crore in the state-owned TASMAC corporation, though that case was later stayed by the Supreme Court.

Intensified Scrutiny on DMK Leaders

Periyasamy, 72, is a senior DMK leader and currently serves as Minister for Rural Development, Panchayats, and Panchayat Unions. His son, Senthil Kumar, represents the Palani constituency in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.

The ED’s actions have stirred political attention in the state, particularly after reports of a tense atmosphere at Periyasamy’s residence on Chennai’s Greenways Road. Neither the minister nor his family has issued an official response so far. Updates from the ED on the investigation are awaited.
